I’ve seen varying degrees of planting distances.  From 25 sf per tree up to about 324-400 sf in some homesteads.  I have attempted to give each tree a bit over 121 sf for a total of just over 100 trees available in the proposed orchard area.  I will probably cut that number somewhat, as there are ONLY 2 of us at the moment and probably a few of the trees I will want to plant will definitely need a bit more space than that.  Things like oranges, apples, pears and tangerines, etc are likely only going to get that 11×11 area.

We’re in

So we’ve been here about a week and a half now and we’re still getting unpacked and settled in. The lawn is out of control right now and the decision between sheep or cattle has been looming heavy. I feel like a bred cow would be the best choice, but far from a simple one, as there is a strong desire to have a breed called Red Poll. Unfortunately, there aren’t so many of those around. I’m tossing around Jersey x Lowline Angus too, having just read about those. Again, there is a problem of availability. So nothing has been done yet, but we are planning to attend the Arcadia auction (http://www.arcadiastockyard.com) Monday to see what is available via that route.
